Hévíz Thermal Lake is the world’s largest natural thermal lake with biological activity, offering a remarkable mix of history, biodiversity and healing properties. It was born alongside Hungary’s iconic Lake Balaton around 20-22 thousand years ago. Emerging from the retreat of the Pannonian Sea, its origin is linked to the region’s volcanic activity. Its rich history is filled with fascinating legends, remarkable individuals and centuries of medical innovation.

Ancient origins

The lake’s healing power has been recognized for over 2000 years. Archaeological evidence shows that Romans utilized the lake for its therapeutic benefits. Evidence also suggests that humans inhabited the Hévíz region as early as the late Stone Age. In Roman times, it was a bustling settlement, and the nearby Egregy district still holds remnants of this past, including Roman villa ruins and a medieval Árpád-era church, showcasing Hévíz’s long-standing reputation as a hub for wellness and community.

One legend tells of Flavius Theodosius, a sickly Roman boy, whose nurse prayed for a miracle. The Virgin Mary answered her prayers by creating a warm spring whose water healed the boy. The boy later became Emperor of Rome and declared Christianity the state religion in 391 AD.

Exceptional water properties

Covering an area of 46 350 m², equivalent to about 6.5 soccer fields, the lake is sustained by mineral-rich springs found deep within the earth. Those thermal springs, emerging from a 38,5-meter-deep cave system, release a unique blend of cold and hot water streams. Analysis reveals that the cold spring water is 8000 years old, while the hot spring water has been flowing for 12 000 years.

The lake’s water is entirely renewed every 72 hours, with a flow rate of 410 liters per second, ensuring continuous purity. Rich in sulfur, radium, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonates, the lake offers the combined benefits of various mineral waters. With temperatures ranging from 36°C in summer to 24°C in winter, the lake remains a year-round retreat for relaxation and healing.

Unique ecosystem

Hévíz thermal lake is also a thriving ecosystem, supporting a remarkable diversity of species suited to its warm, mineral-rich water and surrounding wetlands. One of its most striking features is the colorful water lilies, including the Indian red water lily (Nymphaea rubra), introduced by botanist Lovassy Sándor in the late 19th century. These lilies not only add beauty to the lake but also help regulate its temperature and preserve the therapeutic mud. Native white water lilies (Nymphaea alba) thrive in the lake’s outflows, while wetland plants like sedges and marsh irises flourish along its edges.

The lake’s fauna is equally remarkable. The Hévíz dwarf carp, an endemic species, has adapted perfectly to the warm water, while mosquito fish, introduced in the 1930s to control mosquitoes, play a role in maintaining the lake’s balance by feeding on dead skin. Birdlife is abundant, with residents like the little grebe and migratory visitors such as grey herons, egrets and kingfishers. Amphibians and reptiles, including marsh turtles, dice snakes and fire-bellied toads, inhabit the lake and its surroundings, while the ecosystem also supports microscopic life forms such as bacteria, algae and freshwater sponges. The nearby protective forest further enriches the biodiversity, offering refuge to small mammals, birds and insects.

Transforming Hévíz into a world-class spa town

The modern era of Hévíz as a health resort began in the 18th century, notably under the patronage of the Festetics family, known for their contributions to Hungary’s cultural and scientific advancements, who developed the area into a renowned spa destination. Count György Festetics commissioned the first bathhouse in 1795, laying the foundation for Hévíz’s modern reputation.

The early 20th century marked a golden age for Hévíz under the Reischl family. Visionary entrepreneur Vencel Reischl leased Hévíz in 1905, transforming it into a prestigious European spa destination. His ambitious projects included constructing elegant villas, modernizing facilities and introducing advanced medical practices. His marketing savvy elevated Hévíz’s international profile, drawing visitors from across the continent.

Pioneers of Hévíz’s medical heritage

Several luminaries shaped Hévíz’s reputation for cutting-edge medical treatments:

Dr. Vilmos Schulhof and Dr. Ödön Schulhof

Dr. Vilmos Schulhof brought a scientific approach to Hévíz’s therapeutic offerings. He established the Zander Institute, introducing mechanized physiotherapy to assist patients with limited mobility. His extensive writings detailed Hévíz’s health benefits, enhancing its international reputation. His half-brother, Dr. Ödön Schulhof, carried forward this legacy, advancing medical research and patient care in the region.

Dr. Károly Moll

Dr. Moll’s work revolutionized hydrotherapy. A pioneer in balneology, he developed the weight bath therapy, a unique underwater treatment for spinal disorders. He also mapped the lake’s water currents and authored over 50 publications, cementing Hévíz’s status as a global medical hub.

Health benefits

Hévíz is renowned for its mineral-rich water, abundant in calcium, magnesium, sulfur and bicarbonates, which provide a holistic approach to wellness. These therapeutic properties make the lake a haven for addressing musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions, as well as certain skin disorders. Bathing in the warm water promotes relaxation and aids in rehabilitation through the natural buoyancy and heat. The lake’s therapeutic mud further enhances its restorative effects.

Dr. Moll’s innovative weight bath therapy is particularly effective for spinal issues, including herniated discs and back pain. The sulfur content helps reduce inflammation, offering relief for arthritis and joint pain, while the antibacterial qualities of the water support skin health, aiding conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Additionally, the steam from the lake is beneficial for respiratory health, clearing airways and enhancing lung function.

The serene environment and buoyant water also alleviate stress and fatigue, making Hévíz a sought-after destination for health tourism. Combining traditional hydrotherapy with advanced physiotherapy and wellness programs, Hévíz ensures a comprehensive approach to healing and rejuvenation.
