If you’re visiting Budapest and want to experience something truly unique, don’t miss the city’s most iconic mode of transportation, the Buda Castle Funicular. A little history

The idea for the Buda Castle Funicular came from Count Ödön Széchenyi, who was inspired by a similar system he saw in Lyon, France. The funicular was built to improve access to the castle district’s ministries, theaters and other establishments. When it opened in 1870, it quickly became a popular attraction, transporting 1.5 million passengers by 1873.

The original steam-powered, cable-drawn system was designed by Ödön Jaruszek, while the construction was supervised by chief engineer Henrik Wohlfarth, who made several modifications to the plans during the process. Its elegant lower station, located at Clark Ádám square, featured a grand terminal housing the machinery, while the simpler upper station welcomed travelers to the castle grounds.

Unfortunately, the funicular was heavily damaged during World War II and remained out of service until 1986. During its restoration, it was modernized with electric motors and complemented by glass-paneled stations that harmonize with the surrounding historical architecture.

Spanning 95 meters, the funicular ascends an elevation of 50 meters in just 95 seconds. The two three-compartment cars, named “Gellért” and “Margit,” operate in a counterbalanced system, ensuring safety and efficiency. Designed to carry 24 passengers per car, the system includes a robust spring-based brake that activates in case of cable failure, making the ride as safe as it is scenic.

Why to visit?

The Buda Castle Funicular is a must-visit for several reasons.
